种草 · 拔草 · 打卡 · 攻略

Xiaohongshu (小红书) is where people post reviews, travel plans and shopping hauls as illustrated notes. Its vocabulary is about wanting, trying and recommending, and much of it has spread into ordinary speech.

Wanting and trying

The loop every post is part of.

小红书
Xiǎohóngshū
Xiaohongshu
Literally little red book. Posts on it are called 笔记 bǐjì, notes.
种草
zhòngcǎo
to make someone want something
Plant grass: a post plants the wish to buy or visit. 被种草了, I've been convinced.
拔草
bácǎo
to finally try it, or be put off
Pull up the grass: either you satisfied the wish or a bad review killed it. Context decides.
避雷
bìléi
a warning: avoid it
Dodge the thunder. A post titled 避雷 tells you where not to go.
Why it works

The grass image is the key. A want grows in you like grass, someone plants it, and you pull it up by buying the thing or by learning it was not worth it.

Going places

The travel half of the app.

打卡
dǎkǎ
to visit and post (check in)
Originally clocking in at work. Now going somewhere to photograph it: 网红打卡地, an Instagram-famous spot.
网红
wǎnghóng
internet-famous, an influencer
网 net plus 红 popular. A 网红店 is a shop famous online.
攻略
gōnglüè
a guide, a how-to
From gaming, a walkthrough. Now any detailed plan: 旅游攻略, a travel guide.
宝藏
bǎozàng
a hidden gem
Treasure: 宝藏小店, a little shop worth finding.
Why it works

攻略 shows how words travel. It began as how to beat a level and now means how to see Chengdu in three days. Gaming slang reaching lifestyle posts is one of the most common paths.

A post, piece by piece

The formula most travel posts follow.

Title
成都三天攻略,吃到撑!
Chéngdū sān tiān gōnglüè, chī dào chēng!
Chengdu in three days: eat till you burst!
Opening
家人们,这次真的被种草了!
jiārénmen, zhè cì zhēn de bèi zhòngcǎo le!
Everyone, this time I was really won over!
A tip
一定要早点去排队。
yídìng yào zǎo diǎn qù páiduì.
Make sure you go early and queue.
A warning
避雷:那家太贵了。
bìléi: nà jiā tài guì le.
Avoid: that place is far too expensive.

Why it works

A number and a promise in the title, a direct greeting, then tips and warnings. Reading a few dozen of these is some of the best reading practice there is, because the photo tells you what every word must mean.

Why 家人们

家人们, family members, is how posters and live streamers address their audience, the way an English creator says hey everyone. It came out of live selling on Douyin and is now everywhere, including in adverts.

绝了
jué le
incredible
好家伙
hǎo jiāhuo
blimey
值得
zhíde
worth it
