Where the ladder comes from
The ranks are the grades of the imperial examinations, which chose China's officials for thirteen centuries. A 童生 was a candidate, a 秀才 had passed at county level, a 举人 at province and a 进士 at the palace. The 状元 was the single highest scorer in the empire.
Where the first promotion lands
Beginner is 500 XP. A perfect first lesson pays 230 and the first visit of the day 50, so Beginner arrives on lesson 2 with a clean round and on lesson 3 otherwise. XP lives in this browser until accounts exist.
