Privacy policy
Short version: your progress is saved in your own browser and, if you make a free account, to your account so it follows you to other devices. An account holds your email address and your progress and nothing else. The only cookie is the one that keeps you signed in. We count visits with an analytics service that sets no cookies and shows us only totals, and we do not sell or share anything about you.

Who we are
Learn Chinese Online Hub is a trading name of LUNAR INTERACTIVE ARTS LTD, company number 12044811, registered office 102 Lady Margaret Road, Flat D, London, England, N19 5EX. Registered in England and Wales. We are the data controller for this website. For anything about your data, email [email protected].
What stays in your browser
Your finished lessons, quiz results, review deck, XP and rank, and your settings (pinyin help, tone colours, sound) are saved in your browser's local storage on your own device. They are not cookies. Without an account they are not sent to us and we cannot see them; clearing your browser's site data deletes them, and they do not move to another device. With an account, the same progress is also saved to your account, as the next section says.
Your account
A free account is optional. Days 1 to 7 of the daily course, the first days of every other course and every tool on the site need no account. If you make one, this is what we hold and why.
- Your email address, from the moment you sign up. We use it to identify your account, to send you sign-in links and codes, and to tell you about anything important, such as a change to these terms. Lawful basis: providing the account you asked for (contract).
- A one-time sign-in link or code, emailed each time you sign in. There is no password. It works once, for one hour.
- Your learning progress: lessons finished, quiz results, your review deck, XP, rank, streak, achievements and your display settings. It is copied from your browser to your account so it follows you to every device you sign in on. Lawful basis: contract.
- Your plan: a free account today. Lawful basis: contract.
We keep your account until you ask us to delete it. To delete it, email [email protected] from the address you signed up with, and we delete the account and its progress within 30 days and confirm when we have. Copies in our database provider's daily backups expire within 7 days after that. We do not send newsletters or marketing to account holders.
What reaches other companies when you visit
- Cloudflare hosts the site. Like any web host, it receives your IP address and basic request details in order to serve the pages and protect the site from abuse, and keeps them only briefly.
- Your country, for prices. When a page shows a price, it asks our host which country your connection comes from, so the price can be shown in pounds, euros or dollars. Only the country is used, it is not stored, and nothing else is looked up.
- Ahrefs Web Analytics counts visits, so we can see which pages people find useful. When a page loads, a small script from Ahrefs sends it the page address, the page you came from, and your browser and device type. Ahrefs also receives your IP address as part of that request and uses it to work out your country. It sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and we see only totals, never an individual visitor. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in knowing which pages are useful.
- Google Fonts supplies the Nunito typeface. Your browser fetches it from Google, which receives your IP address and browser details when it does. We do not receive anything from Google.
- Speech. The "Hear it" buttons use your browser's own speech feature. Depending on your browser and device, the text may be read by a voice on your device or sent to your browser maker's speech service. We do not receive it.
If you have an account, two more companies process your data for us:
- Supabase stores accounts and progress, on servers in Ireland.
- Resend sends the sign-in emails, from servers in Ireland. It receives your email address and the email it sends you.
Cloudflare, Google and Ahrefs may process this information outside the UK, including in the United States and Singapore, and Supabase and Resend are companies based in the United States; each does so under its own safeguards for international transfers.
What we collect
Without an account, nothing that identifies you through the website itself. With an account, only what the section on your account lists. There is no newsletter form and no advertising, and the visit counts described above are totals. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and use it only to reply. We keep that correspondence for as long as it is needed to deal with your message and for up to two years after, then delete it. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in answering you.
Cookies
The site sets one cookie, and only when you are signed in: lco_at, which holds your sign-in for up to an hour at a time and is renewed while you use the site, so the site can open the lessons your account includes. Your sign-in itself is kept in your browser's local storage. Both are removed when you sign out. They are strictly necessary for the account you asked for, so no consent is needed for them. The analytics service sets no cookies, and the local storage for your progress is not a cookie and is not used to track you, so there is no cookie banner.
Where your data is held
Without an account, your progress is held only in your own browser. With an account, your email address, your plan and your progress are held for us by Supabase on servers in Ireland, in the European Union, not in the UK. UK data protection law recognises the European Union as protecting personal data to the same standard, so moving it there needs no extra safeguards.
Payments, when they open
Payments are not open yet, and nothing is collected for them. When they open, checkout will be run by Link, Stripe's checkout (Onelink in the UK), as seller of record: Link collects your payment details and handles tax, and we receive only what we need to know you have paid. Before payments open, this policy will be updated to name each company and say how long each thing is kept.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of any personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, and ask us to restrict or stop using it. Email [email protected] and we will reply within one month. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Accounts are for people aged 13 and over. Without an account, the site collects nothing that identifies anyone, children included.
Changes
When this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. A change that affects how your data is used will be explained on this page before it takes effect.
