Reacting in the comments

Day 1 of 15~10 minThe words under every video
Pinyin help
Tone colours
哈哈哈 · 绝了 · 666 · 好家伙

Open the comments under any Chinese video and the same handful of reactions fill the screen. They look like code, but most are ordinary Chinese used in a new way, or a pun on a sound. Once the logic is pointed out, each one is easy to remember.

Under every video

The reactions you will see first.

哈哈哈哈
hāhāhāhā
hahaha
The more 哈, the funnier. Often typed as hhhh.
绝了
jué le
incredible, unbeatable
绝 is extreme, the end of the line. Praise for anything from a song to a noodle shop.
666
liùliùliù
amazing, nice one
六 liù sounds like 溜 liù, smooth and skilful. It started with gamers.
好家伙
hǎo jiāhuo
wow, blimey
Surprise, good or bad. Older than the internet and brought back by it.
Why it works

Comment slang is short because comments are. Most of it reuses an ordinary word (绝, 家伙) or puns on a sound (666), which is why it is learnable: the logic is right there once you see it.

Typed, and said out loud

Some of it works in speech, some of it only on a screen.

Amazing
In the comments
666
liùliùliù
Out loud, with anyone
太厉害了
tài lìhai le
666 is fine out loud among friends. 太厉害了 works with anyone, including your friend's grandmother.
So good
In the comments
绝绝子
juéjuézǐ
Out loud, with anyone
太棒了
tài bàng le
绝绝子 was everywhere around 2021 and now reads as a joke about slang. 太棒了 never dates.
That's absurd
In the comments
离谱
lípǔ
Out loud, with anyone
不会吧
bú huì ba
离谱, off the musical score, is outrageous. It works in speech too; 不会吧, no way, is the gentler one.
Why it works

The safest rule: understand everything, say only what you would hear from people your own age. Slang in a learner's mouth can sound like a costume, the same risk as fantasy Chinese.

Under a food video

Four comments, each one a formula.

Comment
这个也太好吃了吧!
zhège yě tài hǎochī le ba!
This looks way too delicious!
也太…了吧 is an exclamation: this is just too…
Reply
绝了,求地址!
jué le, qiú dìzhǐ!
Incredible. Address, please!
求, to beg, is how people ask for anything in comments: 求链接, link please.
Comment
好家伙,要排队两小时。
hǎo jiāhuo, yào páiduì liǎng xiǎoshí.
Blimey, it's a two-hour queue.
Reply
666,值得!
liùliùliù, zhíde!
Nice, worth it!
Why it works

求地址 is the most useful line here. 求 plus a noun is the standard way to ask a poster for something, and it is polite in a way the word beg is not in English.

Where these words come from

A lot of Chinese internet slang starts in game live streams and in 弹幕 dànmù, the comments that scroll across a video as it plays. From there it moves to Douyin and Xiaohongshu, then into speech. The further along that path a word gets, the longer it tends to last.

好吃
hǎochī
delicious
太贵了
tài guì le
too expensive
多少钱?
duōshao qián?
how much?
