Greetings and meetings

Pinyin help
Tone colours

First meetings in China follow a small set of rituals, and doing them roughly right matters more than getting every word perfect. These are the lines that carry them.

How to greet people, introduce yourself, handle a business card, and leave politely, including the lines a host says to you.

Saying hello

你好
nǐ hǎo
hello
您好
nín hǎo
hello, politely
For someone older or senior to you.
大家好
dàjiā hǎo
hello, everyone
好久不见
hǎojiǔ bú jiàn
long time no see
The English phrase is thought to come from this one.
Two hands for a card

Business cards are offered and taken with both hands, turned so the other person can read them. Look at the card for a moment before putting it away, and do not write on it in front of them.

Introductions

我叫大卫
wǒ jiào Dàwèi
I'm David
很高兴认识你
hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ
nice to meet you
这是我的朋友
zhè shì wǒ de péngyou
this is my friend
您贵姓
nín guìxìng
may I ask your surname?
The polite form from day 3.
Names go family first

Chinese names put the surname first, so 王小明 is Mr Wang. Using someone's surname with a title, 王先生 or 王老师, is the safe choice until they invite you to do otherwise.

At work

这是我的名片
zhè shì wǒ de míngpiàn
here's my card
请多关照
qǐng duō guānzhào
I look forward to working with you
请坐
qǐng zuò
please sit down
辛苦了
xīnkǔ le
thanks for your hard work
Said to someone who has done something for you.

Leaving

我先走了
wǒ xiān zǒu le
I'll head off first
慢走
màn zǒu
take care
What the host says as you leave. Literally walk slowly.
下次见
xià cì jiàn
see you next time
保持联系
bǎochí liánxì
keep in touch
