China's high-speed rail is quick, cheap and very well signposted. The Chinese you need is mostly for the edges: the ticket, the gate, and asking the way once you are out of the station.

Buying a rail ticket, finding the platform, following the answer when you ask the way, and getting off at the right stop.

Buying a ticket

我要买一张票
wǒ yào mǎi yì zhāng piào
I'd like to buy a ticket
张 for flat things, from day 5.
去上海的高铁
qù Shànghǎi de gāotiě
the high-speed train to Shanghai
几点的车
jǐ diǎn de chē
which departure?
二等座
èr děng zuò
a second class seat
二 here, not 两, because it is an ordinal.
Your ticket is your passport

Rail tickets are tied to your passport number, and you show the passport itself at security and at the gate. Keep it somewhere you can reach it without unpacking.

At the station

在哪个站台
zài nǎge zhàntái
which platform?
检票口在哪儿
jiǎnpiàokǒu zài nǎr
where's the ticket gate?
这趟车到北京吗
zhè tàng chē dào Běijīng ma
does this train go to Beijing?
晚点了
wǎndiǎn le
it's delayed
Arrive earlier than feels necessary

Big stations are the size of airports, with a security check at the entrance and a gate that closes a few minutes before departure. Half an hour early is comfortable. Five minutes is a missed train.

Asking the way

请问地铁站怎么走
qǐngwèn dìtiězhàn zěnme zǒu
excuse me, how do I get to the metro?
一直走
yìzhí zǒu
straight on
往左拐
wǎng zuǒ guǎi
turn left
走路要多久
zǒulù yào duō jiǔ
how long on foot?

On board

这是我的座位
zhè shì wǒ de zuòwèi
this is my seat
下一站是哪儿
xià yí zhàn shì nǎr
what's the next stop?
我要下车
wǒ yào xià chē
I'm getting off
请让一下
qǐng ràng yíxià
excuse me, can I get past?

The daily course builds these phrases into real conversation, one short lesson a day. Days 1 to 7 need no account, and a free account opens the rest of the first month.
